Kyle this is a fantastic write-up on how a lower mileage training plan tailored to the individual can and does work. I really wish more coaches would embrace or at least consider this approach. There is still a trend for non-elites to crank out 100+ mile weeks like an elite/sponsored runner. The majority of us simply want to train hard & finish the course, without fully crippling ourselves in the process.

Looking back at my training peaks over the last couple of years, I’m wondering if I could’ve benefited from that. I’m taking this year off from ultras to let the body recover, and just train for health.

Appreciate seeing this. I will do a a few 50ks and 1 or 2 50m or 100ks a year off of a pretty low base of 20-30 miles a week and finish consistently front of the mid pack. Everyone is different in how their body reacts to training but yea, I see so many people thinking they need to run 60-70 mile weeks to do a 50m race. Not really necessary!
