Training for a 200 miler
Divide 200 prep: Week 2, Phase 0
Planned mileage: 45/completed mileage 45.32
Planned vert: 4000-5000ft/completed vert 6,388ft
Nothing groundbreaking in this report.
The objective this week did not change much from the previous week. I’m still in what I’m calling “phase 0”, where my emphasis is not yet big stats and long days out, but rather burning into me the habits of running more days, getting a vert baseline re-established and generally getting into the headspace I need to be for the work ahead. The mileage ad vert ticked up ever so slightly but nothing close to significant, that will come.
The weather feels more like spring and me and the wife were able to get a day in the mountains which collected a decent amount of my weekly vert. The days I spend in the alpine with her are truly my happiest. We climbed hard in the gym a few days, runs felt light and snappy and generally wanted more miles this week then the plan allowed for, which is good. The next few weeks see a continued gentle pulse up toward 60mpw. Once we hit the last week of February, things really kick into high gear and I’ll be between 70-120mpw until race day (minus taper) with most weeks sitting between 12,000-25,000ft of gain. There is a lot of work to be done and I cannot wait to do it.
One thing I tend to do when I enter a race build is consume more content related to the objectives I’m chasing. I’ll try to share what I watch and listen to here when things stand out. This past week, Cam Hanes had on Kilian North, arguably the best 200 mile athlete out there right now, and I enjoyed their talk. Nothing that ground breaking in terms of what was discussed, but I find if you want to do a thing, it’s helpful to immerse yourself in the thing.
Now to enjoy a rest day that my body doesn’t really need, because it’s part of the plan, and the plan runs the show for a while.
Onward, Always.
